Dance Class Attire and Class Descriptions
What level am I?
(Final placement is at the discretion of the teacher)
In these classes, we start with raw movement and concepts. Small details are not emphasized until skills meet a specific standard. For example, in a beginning jazz class students will work on a single pirouette, the emphasized skills will be turning the correct direction, executing a high passé, and spotting. The details that will not be emphasized are pressing shoulders down, using the core, and stretching the supporting leg. The important thing is that the student is executing the pirouette in the correct direction.
Beginning students are those with zero to two years of experience in the given style.
In intermediate classes, we will use endless repetition to reiderate extreme technical skill. For example, now that the jazz student knows how to do a single pirouette, it is now time to emphasize the details. The goal is to eventually execute two, three, four, or even five pirouettes. This is not possible with out a straight supporting leg, a strong core, a quick spot of the head, proper arm placement, and strong calfs to lift onto a high relevé.
Intermediate students should have at least two years of prior experience in the desired styled class.
Advanced dance classes will focus on dynamics, confidence, rhythmic attack, and precision. The teacher will invite daring movement while keeping an eye out for previously learned concepts. Now that the advanced jazz dancer can execute multiple pirouettes, they will now explore new turns in different positions and rhythms, such as á la secondes & leg hold turns. With that said, it is very important that these dancers are strong enough to move into an advanced class. Placement in all intermediate/ advanced classes is ultimately decided by the dance instructor.
Advanced students should have at least four or more years of experience in the given style.
